Battle Rifle The M14 is referred to as a battle rifle. This term is given to weapons that fire full-power rifle ammunition. The M14 first entered service with the U.S. military in 1957. The weapon welches the standard issue U.S. rifle from 1959 until 1970. The M14 was also used for basic training by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps during that period. The M14 has largely been replaced by the M16 rifle. However, the M14 is still used on the front lines by the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard as of 2018. It is also widely used as a ceremonial weapon by U.S. soldiers. Modified M14 rifles are the basis for the M21 and M25 sniper rifles. Development and Use Development of the M14 rifle began shortly after the Second World War and continued throughout the Korean War in the 1950s. The rifle was cr eated in an attempt to replace four different weapon systems- the M1 Garand, the M1 Carbine, the M3 Grease Gun, and the M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle. U.S. military officials wanted a rifle that was durable in hostile environments and provided deadly accuracy. The M14 rifle was widely used during the Vietnam Conflict of the 1960s. After the competing M16 rifle was introduced in 1970, the M14 took on a new role with the U.S. military as a sniper rifle. The M14 rifles accuracy over long ranges made it ideal for marksmen. Versions of the M14 rifle have been used by snipers in Afghanistan and Iraq. These M14 rifles have been modified to include scopes and fiberglass stocks. The M14 rifle is also on regular display at military funerals, parades, and other ceremonies.

Not because of when I was born or anything, but more because my eyes unconsciously roll every time someone talks about Millennials. If you just felt a little eye roll yurself, then welcome. The reason I bring this up is that, as much as we dont like this label, were having a massive impact on how HR departments work nowadays. Were driving new technologies (and please stop making us explain them) and, fruchtwein importantly, have different values than our parents and grandparents. If we dont like a job, we go for another one without thinking too much about it. That causes headaches around turnover, retaining talent, and keeping employees happy for many businesses.At , we faced a unique version of this problem. Because every one of our 19 kollektiv members is a Millennial. Considering our entire mission is to help people land their dream jobs, it would be more than a little awkward if it turned out o ur company is full of dissatisfied Millennials. Ultimately, we decided that for our employees to succeed and stay meant doing the unthinkable killing the HR department.Okay, thats a little dramatic transformed is more accurate. Our HR department became an Employee Success Department. But it wasnt just a fancy label. This change actually meant a fundamental shift from thinking more about work environment to thinking about individuals and their development.Are you having problems with keeping Millennials?A 14th-century farmer didnt think much of producing the same amount of wheat every year. Not unlike that farmer, my parents worked the same jobs for decades without thinking much about it. If I tell them Im upset I havent improved myself in my job over the last year, theyre likely to let out a little chuckle. But Im not alone. Our generation expects both personal and professional development. Without it, theyll move on to a job that can provide that.For companies with younger employe es, this means its time to adapt or die. Ive seen this problem firsthand, speaking to dozens of companies facing serious issues with keeping Millennials engaged and motivated. The good news is that some have found a way to harness the power of this generation and thrive. Heres one illustrative example.Airbnbs Employee Experience modelAirbnb seems to understand this pretty well. Theyve implemented a work as an experience model and today, theyre one of the 50 best distribution policys to work and have a 90% job acceptance rate. So what do they do to be so successful?To keep their employees happy, they transformed their HR department to the Employe Experience Department. Their Chief Of Employee Experience, Mark Levy, doesnt only do recruiting, talent management development, and HR. He thinks of ways to create memorable workplace experiences by doing things like providing healthy food or a workspace which has a nerd cave and a place to meditate. His entire position is based on balancin g the 5 elements of the visual below in order to create an optimal employee experience (does that make him a shaman?) The result of Levys efforts creating a workplace as an experience has 90% of employees recommending Airbnb as a great place to work.s Employee SuccessmodelAs a company that helps people find the right job with the right workplace culture, do we practice what we preach? Do we make our employees successful and happy?No.Just kidding. We do a lot to achieve this. While Airbnb does a great job making their employees happy at work, we try to go a bit deeper. Initially, this involved our COO and Deni (now the Chief of Employee Success) putting a lot of effort into the fun part of work. We traveled together, had parties, dinners, and healthy breakfasts. But as our team started growing, we realized that it wasnt enough.We saw a potential problem in how companies like Airbnb handled this. The focus on fun and the physical needs of employees overrode focus on their performance, the impact they have in the company, and how successful they feel each month. But, even the name of their strategy, The Workplace As An Experience, signals that the focus is mainly on Workplace, rather than the aforementioned progress and development. Thats why I was encouraged to try it out and present the benefits of using to 150+ people at a career event. Well, there is a subtle relationship between performance and a light degree of stress. As described in the Inverted-U Model by Robert Yerkes and John Dodson, a slight pressure gets the best out of people while also keeping them happy and engaged. That s why at we dont believe in a stress-free environment. A bit of stress is always good.We also regularly check in with each employee, asking how they feel about our product and company goals. Our team works best when we all are on one page. To check that, we do a short survey twice a year not too often, not too rarely. Another great way to work on employee success is having one-on-one meetings. In smaller companies, a CEO does them with each team member. But we decided to do things differently. For example, our CTO has one-on-ones with each member of the dev. team. The CSO talks to the CEO and Customer Success Department. The COO talks to everyone in the absatzwirtschaft team. You get the point. Like that, one-on-one meetings dont become a burden for the CEO and employees. They help us to keep track of everyones feelings, places for improvement, and challenges everyones facing. Its also a good time to update the team on challenges the companys facing. One-on-ones have been a real ga me-changer for our team. It helped us spot small problems before they became huge or just see hows the COOs moving houses going. We highly recommend them. Better yet, nearly all mindfulness participants had stayed quit, while many of those in the other group had lost ground, yielding a fivefold difference between the twoWere often told that you cant get rid of ahabit you can only replace it. Heck, even Ive said that.But mindfulnessdidnt replacesmoking with anythingOur da ta showed that mindfulness decoupled this link between craving and smoking.So hes really on to something here. Something you can use to beat your bad habits. (And something I can use to stop checkingInstagramwhile writing blog posts.) So hows it work?First, we gotta ask the question nobody usually bothers to ask why do we havebad habits in the first place?Bad Habits Are Coping, Not FixingYou feel stressed. Or anxious. Or sad. Whatever. Point is, youre feelingnot-good. Naturally, you want to feel good. So youdo something that has made youfeel good in the past.Maybe its checking Facebook, maybe its meth. Same difference to your brain.FromThe Craving MindWe each have stress buttons that get pushed, and what they are largely depends on how we have learned, in a reward-dependent manner, to cope (or not cope) with lifeIts the standard habit modelTrigger, Behavior, Reward.And after you do it enough times, its a reflex. Youre instinctively reacting, not thoughtfully responding. Youre on aut opilot. Youre a puppet.But the real issue with bad habits is while they scratch the itch, they dont fix the underlying problem. Being worried about your bills might lead you to check Facebook, but that doesnt make Mark Zuckerberg pay your mortgage.In fact, bad habitsnot only dont fix your problems, they often make them worse.FromThe Craving MindWe have conditioned ourselves to deal with stress in ways that ultimately perpetuate it rather than release us from it.And checking Facebook is actually a perfect example.FromThe Craving MindLees research kollektiv found that a preference for online social interaction correlated with deficient mood regulation and negative outcomes such as a diminished sense of self-worth and increased social withdrawal. Let me say that again online social interaction increased social withdrawal. People obsessively went on Facebook to feel better, yet afterward felt worse.But since youre reacting instinctively, yourarely notice your bad habit is actually makin g the problem worse. And thats where mindfulness comes innoticing.Noticing isat the heart of mindfulness. But whatismindfulness?Dont worry, Ill make it simplePay Attention. Dont Judge.When youre stressed and engage in a bad habit, youre usually not paying attention. And if you do pay attention, youre probably frustrated. Frustrated that you feel this way. Frustrated that youre doing something you know is bad.Take a step back. Pay attention. Dont judge.FromThe Craving Mind(Mindfulness is) The awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally. As Stephen Batchelor recently wrote, this definition points toward a human capability of learning how to stabilize attention and dwell in a lucid space of non-reactive awareness.By really watching what you do, noticing how you feel, you can abflug torealize the bad habit isnt helping fix the problem. You dont really feel any better. And that realization is key. Thats what will break the cycle.Fr omThe Craving MindSeeing what we really get from our habits helps us understand them on a deeper level, know it in our bones, without needing to control or force ourselves to hold back from smoking. This awareness is what mindfulness is all about seeing clearly what happens when we get caught up in our behaviors and then becoming viscerally disenchanted. Over time, as we learn to see more and more clearly the results of our actions, we let go of old habits and form new ones. The paradox here is that mindfulness is just about being interested in, and getting close and personal with, what is happening in our bodies and minds. It is really this willingness to turn toward our experience rather than to try to make our unpleasant cravings go away as quickly as possible.Cravings fade with time - but youusually dont pay attention to that part. When the internet goes out in your house youre initially frustrated but then you find something else to do.But when youimmediately give in to bad ha bits, youreinforce them. Brewercalls it RAIN Recognize, Accept, Investigate, Note. Heres how it works1 RecognizeYoure feeling stressed. Youre robotically headed towardhabit-modeRecognize it. And dont you even think about rationalizing itOh, but I justhappento feel like checking Instagram for the fiftiethtime today.No. No, you dont just feel like it. Realize what youre doing. Youre trying to copewith some discomfort by engaging in your bad habit. Recognize the craving.This next part is trickier2 AcceptAccept it.That doesnt mean give in. Just accept that the craving is there.Dont beat yourself upfor wanting it. Dont try to ignore it, or try to distract yourself, or fight it.The good nachrichten is you dont have to doanythingjust yet.The bad news is its hard to do nothing when youre uncomfortable and want to scratch that itch.Brewer recommends acknowledging your acceptance in a small, active way. Nod your head or think here we go.Now heres where things get interesting3 InvestigateNormally you deal with bad habits by trying to get away from them. Mindfulness does the exact opposite. Get curious.As the craving grows, notice how you feel. Specifically.FromThe Craving MindInvestigateit as it builds. Do this by asking, What does my body feel like right now? Dont go looking. See what arises most prominently. Let it come to you.The key here is nonidentification. Remember you are not your thoughts. Your brain thinks all kinds of crazy stuff. That doesnt mean those thoughtsareyou. If you broke your arm, youd say my arm is broken not I am broken.So investigate yourfeelings as if you were looking atan animal in a zoo. Check it out. Watch things unfold.Pay attention.A nd heres how we make the itch go away without scratching it4 NoteMake mental notes of yourfeelings. Use a single word or a short phrase to put a label on what you feel.FromThe Craving MindFinally, notethe experience as you follow it. Keep it simple by using short phrases or single words. For example thinking, restlessness in the stomach, rising sensation, burning, etc. Follow it until it completely subsides. If you get distracted, return to the investigation by repeating the question, what does my body feel like right now? See if you can ride it until it is completely gone.Sounds sillybut its actually extremely powerful. Youre using some bleeding-edge neuroscience here. Noting reduces the impact of emotions.ViaThe Upward Spiralin one MRI study, appropriately titled Putting Feelings into Words participants viewed pictures of people with emotional facial expressions. Predictably, each participants amygdala activated to the emotions in the picture. But when they were asked to name the emotion, the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex activated and reduced the emotional amygdala reactivity. How long have you been in business and operations? Mad Paws was founded in Aug 2017 and went live in Oct 2014. My career started in 2012 when I started with ExxonMobil as a business analyst. I have five years of experience in business and 1.5 years of experience in Operations. What did you study? Commercial engineering with a major in Finance and a minor in International Business What did you want to be when you were younger? A princess ? I never had a concrete career path in mind I just wanted to do something that would make me happy and where I could contribute/teach/pass on knowledge to others. When did you first know you wanted to work in business and operations? During my studies at uni I already realised that business would become my field of expertise, hence all the choices I made to follow that study path. I never thought specifically about operations, but I am someone who really enjoys wearing different hats and working on different projects, hence the choice to go for an operations role within a start-up. I was never the person with just one skill or ambition, hence I knew I would never become a lawyer or a doctor I wanted to become a Jack (or Jill) of all trades. Explain a typical day at work Now theres a paradox in my job there is no typical day at work. In operations, and especially in a start-up, priorities change continuously, hence no day is the same. My day usually starts off assessing what has happened or changed between now and yesterday and how that impacts the overall operations of the business (and hence my priorities). After that, its a game of how do I make my day longer than 24 hours to make all of this happen. Whats the most int eresting thing thats happened to you in your career? After 3.5 years of intense ambition and hard work, I ended up with a severe depression and work-related burnout. Not only did this impact my career, but my entire personal life (relationship, friends, family). At the time, it was still considered taboo and I received very mixed reactions from people as they had no clue what was happening to me (neither did I by the way). I struggled for 7 months to find my life balance, recalibrate and decide what I wanted my life (including my work-life) to look like in the future. It was the darkest, most difficult period in my entire life and was something I was ashamed of for a very long time. If you ask someone, what is the most interesting thing thats happened to you in your career, Im guessing this is not the typical answer youd expect. What I went through is nothing I would ever wish anyone else to have to go through, but at the same time it was the greatest growth period Ive had in my lif e and in hindsight, it brought me exactly to where I am today, both in life and career-wise. I am grateful for everything I learned during that dark period, as it hugely changed my perspective and view on life and work. If I hadnt gone through it, I would probably still be stuck in my golden cage and wouldve lost way more along the way Name the best and worst parts of your job Thats a difficult question. The best parts are sometimes the worst parts and vice versa. For example the continuous change and shift in priorities being the structured perfectionist that I am, dealing with this continuous change has been extremely challenging and not at all a walk in the park, but at the same time the best part of it is the freedom I have in my work and feeling empowered that I get to be the composer of my work/role. fremdartig from that, managing my team and seeing them grow both personally and professionally gives me wings and reminds me that I am doing the right thing.
