The Box

seventeenth Apr 2009 | Comments Off on The Box The Box I’ve just done a spring clean and I got here across one field which was full of information with newspaper cuttings from the time I worked on the Foreign Office. I had all kinds in there, with completely different folders for: I may go on. Two things struck me about this. Firstly, there’s so much less excuse for litter in the age of the web. Second, I think this symbolises lots of the problems individuals have in choosing a satisfying profession. People graduate with the world at their toes. They feel they'll do something â€" and that’s probably true. But, and this is the bit no one tells you, very often success is determined by working out what your priority pursuits are. Without doing that, we tend to drift from opportunity to alternative and topic to subject without any real compass of what’s actually essential. The reality is that my field was a trap. I thought I was pursuing fulfilment, but in reality I was wasting time by not pondering fastidiously enough about what I a ctually wished to do.
